Edge of Spider-Verse 3

Swinging into New Dimensions: A Look at Edge of Spider-Verse #3

The latest installment of Edge of Spider-Verse takes us on a cosmic web-slinging adventure! This issue doesn't hold back, introducing two unique heroes that add fresh flavors to the ever-expanding Spider-Verse.

First up, we meet Star-Spider, a spacefaring hero who zips through alien cities in her Silk Ship. Now, that's what I call a commute! Star-Spider's origin and world remain a mystery for now, but the potential for spacefaring adventures is incredibly intriguing. Is she the sole protector out there, or is there a whole team of cosmic web-slingers waiting to be discovered? The issue also brings back Web-Weaver, a fan-favorite from a previous issue. Web-Weaver's return is sure to please those who dug their unique design and butt-kicking abilities.

While the stories themselves are solid, the true star of the show might be the artwork. The detailed alien landscapes for Star-Spider and the dynamic action sequences for Web-Weaver are a visual treat.
Admittedly, some might find the info dump at the beginning of Star-Spider's story a bit clunky. However, the creative use of a mock "trading card" to introduce the villains is a nice touch. Overall, Edge of Spider-Verse #3 is a strong entry in the series. It delivers exciting new heroes, fantastic art, and leaves you wanting more. So, buckle up True Believers, because this issue takes you on a wild ride across the Spider-Verse!

Rat City 1

Hell on Wheels: Rat City #1 Debuts with a Grimdark Twist

Gear up, comic fans, because Rat City #1 just dropped, and it's not for the faint of heart. This debut issue throws us into a dystopian future where humanity grapples with the aftermath of war.

The story centers on Peter Cairn, a grizzled ex-soldier and amputee. But Peter's no ordinary vet. He's become a Hellspawn, not through a demonic pact, but thanks to nanites embedded in his prosthetic legs. These nanites, it turns out, were unwittingly activated by none other than Al Simmons, the original Spawn, during his world-altering rampage.

This unique origin story sets Rat City apart. We're used to seeing Hellspawns forged in deals with the devil, but the idea of a technological, almost accidental, transformation is a refreshing spin.

Writer Erica Schultz (The Deadliest Bouquet, Moon Knight: Black, White, and Blood) teams up with artist Zé Carlos (Captain America, Strange Academy: Moon Knight) to deliver a dark and gritty world. The press release mentions an "extra-length" first issue, which is fantastic news. Hopefully, this allows for a deep dive into Peter's psyche and the ramifications of his twisted powers.

If you enjoy dark, character-driven stories with a dash of the supernatural, Rat City #1 is definitely worth checking out. Just be prepared for a bumpy ride through a war-torn world where the lines between man and monster are blurred.

The Bat-Man: First Knight 2

Shadows Lengthen: The Bat-Man: First Knight #2 Deepens the Mystery

Gotham City shivers in terror as The Bat-Man: First Knight #2 plunges us deeper into the Dark Knight's early struggles. Monstrous figures stalk the streets, leaving a trail of bodies and a baffled GCPD.

This issue picks up the pace from the first installment. We see a more desperate Batman, one who relies on raw willpower and fists to combat these seemingly unstoppable foes. The lack of advanced gadgets and the brutality of the encounters paint a fascinating picture of a Batman still forging his methods.

The growing body count adds weight to the narrative. The question of whether Batman's fledgling skills are enough to protect Gotham hangs heavy. This vulnerability adds a new layer to the character, making him both determined and uncertain.

The press release mentions a "stark reality" faced by Batman. Could this be a turning point where he questions his approach? Perhaps he'll encounter a new ally, or maybe a devastating loss will force him to adapt.

Look out for how the relationship between Batman and Jim Gordon develops. Their early partnership is a cornerstone of the Batman mythos, and seeing it take root in this new setting could be a highlight of the series.

If you're a fan of Batman's origin story or enjoy a good detective thriller with a dark atmosphere, The Bat-Man: First Knight #2 is a must-read. It delivers pulse-pounding action and leaves you yearning to see how Batman overcomes the growing threats plaguing Gotham.

Ultimate X-Men #2

Back to School, New Nightmares: A Look at Ultimate X-Men #2

Ultimate X-Men #2 takes us back to the halls of Xavier’s Academy, but this isn't your typical high school experience. New student Hisako wrestles with her newfound mutant powers, and things get even more complicated when she meets the mysterious Maystorm. The press release hints at a potential friendship between Hisako and Maystorm, both grappling with the challenges of mutant abilities. This camaraderie is a staple of X-Men stories, and it will be interesting to see how it unfolds here in the Ultimate Universe, known for its darker tone.

The issue seems to introduce a spooky element with a “creepy shadow” haunting and taunting our protagonists. This spooky twist adds intrigue – will Hisako and Maystorm have to use their burgeoning powers to combat this shadowy menace? While the press release focuses on the school setting, it’s important to note that Ultimate X-Men is known for its action-packed adventures. Will this issue find a balance between teen drama and superhero action, or will it lean more towards one over the other?

If you’re a fan of the Ultimate X-Men’s unique take on the X-Men mythos, or if you enjoy coming-of-age stories with a supernatural twist, then Ultimate X-Men #2 might be worth checking out.

X-Men '97 2

The Claws Come Out: X-Men '97 #2 Heats Up With Classic Villains

Claws out, True Believers! X-Men '97 #2 throws us back into the heart of the animated series with a double dose of danger. This issue promises a thrilling encounter with the ferocious Sabretooth, a classic Wolverine nemesis.

The press release hints at "a sinister foe from the shadows," adding another layer of mystery. Will this be a familiar villain or a new threat entirely? Either way, it seems the X-Men will have their hands full.

The mention of Jean Grey and Cyclops preparing for a "bold new adventure" teases a potential subplot amidst the action. This could be a great way to explore their dynamic and add a touch of character development alongside the fight scenes.

The cliffhanger – "Can an old friend turn the tide?" – leaves us hanging. Could Wolverine's past come back to haunt him in the form of a former ally-turned-enemy? Or perhaps a surprising hero will emerge to lend a hand.

If you're a fan of the 90s X-Men cartoon and crave action-packed battles with iconic villains, then X-Men '97 #2 is right up your alley. Prepare for nostalgia-fueled thrills and a cliffhanger that will leave you eager for the next issue!
