Thursday Throwdown: Unbreakable X-Men #1 vs. Rogue Storm #1

Welcome back to the ring for another Thursday Throwdown! Tonight, we have two heavyweights from the new Age of Revelation event stepping under the lights, each one promising a vision of the X-Men's desperate future. In one corner, the remnants of a family guarding a secret portal in a fight for their very soul. And in the other, a black-ops kill squad with the single, impossible mission to take down a fallen goddess! Let's meet the contenders.

The Contenders

In the Red Corner: Unbreakable X-Men #1

Weighing in with the emotional weight of a decade of loss, hailing from a shattered Haven House, it’s The Enduring Guardian, Unbreakable X-Men #1! Written by the soul-stirring Gail Simone, with cinematic polish on the art by Lucas Werneck. This title is a spin-out from Uncanny X-Men and is set ten brutal years after a tragedy decimated the team.

The Guardian’s strength comes not from power, but from perseverance. While the rest of the team has been scattered, what remains at Haven House is led by a wounded, blind, and grieving Gambit. They are the last line of defense, guarding a terrifying portal to the Penumbra, where the ancient, angry god Shuvahrak lurks and screams to break free. The known details suggest this book focuses on the love between Rogue and Gambit, which, even in the shadow of loss, is the heart that keeps this Guardian fighting against the odds and cosmic threats.

In the Blue Corner: Rogue Storm #1

Rolling in like a thunderhead, clad in the deadly gear of a black-ops assassin, it’s The God Slayer, Rogue Storm #1! Under the command of writer Murewa Ayodele and artist Roland Boschi, this book reveals the dark fate of one of the most powerful mutants on Earth.

The God Slayer's mission is simple, yet devastating: Kill the Goddess. With Earth’s other deities gone in this future, Ororo Munroe, the mutant god of storms, has been driven mad by grief and dark magic, threatening to plunge the entire world into a new Ice Age. To stop her, Rogue leads an Uncanny X-Force assassination squad—a deadly lineup that includes legends like Gateway, Iceman, Fantomex, Spiral, and Warpath. This title, which continues plots from the current Storm solo series, pits sister against sister and sets up a potential high-stakes confrontation between Gambit and the corrupted Storm over the fate of his marriage.
